Dance Of The Line - Press Release

Blazon Studio, a contemporary industrial art Gallery in downtown Grove, OK is pleased to present a solo-exhibition by Grand Lake area artist Gerry Goodpasture. Opening reception is October 4 from 5 to 8 pm at 27 West Third street. The show will remain on exhibit through the month of October.

Singular calligraphic strokes, weaving over, and under... They push and pull your eye. As you attempt to unravel the mystery of their allusive destination, you find yourself engaged in a smooth flowing visual rhythm. This is what artist Gerry Goodpasture calls the Dance of the Line, a dance which is both therapeutic and chaotic. For Gerry this creative journey has been an evolutionary process that has taken several years to develop. Those who have seen his work in person will tell you that the creative works of Gerry Goodpature are like none other. Like life, they are both beautiful in their complexity and inspirational in their simplicity.

Goodpasture works directly on unprimed canvas using singular evident brushstrokes. The parchment color of his canvases are emblazoned with energetic lines in rich and often electrically vibrant colors creating patterns within patterns. The work is vulnerable and risky as paint is applied only once without shading, so forms, lines, and colors float side by side on the raw flat surface.

When asked about the development of his style, Gerry shared, "I have been peeling back the artifice of painting within myself to arrive at a point of departure that is inspired by the raw materials themselves. The final works fall somewhere between words and pictures. I've applied paint to canvas like this for so long the flow of it has become automatic. Just as a gifted ballerina points her toes without thought or effort, the single strokes I'm applying now have evolved their own character. The strokes of my work take on a life of their own that allows me to appreciate the composition and detach myself from the creation of the piece. It is a way of working with these materials that is directionless. It is intentionally disorienting to the viewer in order to challenge our need for concrete visual meaning found in representational art work."

Goodpasture is an Oklahoma native and Grand Lake resident of fourteen years. Joan Ramsey of Blazon Studio says of the event, "We are really excited to find an artist of Gerry's caliber right here on Grand Lake! We look forward to sharing this five year span of Gerry's work with the surrounding region. Gerry's unique style has been an evolutionary journey, and I find it inspiring and fun. Both Larry Cole, gallery owner, and I are pleased to close out this 2007 summer season with this event."
